Why Use a Personal Trainer

One of the most consistently asked questions I have received whilst working in the fitness industry is ‘do people really need a personal trainer?’. And the answer may be a little more complicated than you’d expect.

Obviously as a professional personal trainer I’d be forgiven for answering this question with
a straight ‘yes’, but that isn’t the case for everyone. Some people have enough knowledge
and gym experience to match their chosen fitness goals and are quite happy maintaining
their own pace towards them, and in this instance paying for a personal trainer may not give
them the rewards necessary to warrant purchasing one of their services, and that’s ok, we’re
not looking to sell to everyone and understand that people are very different in their
approach to exercise. However, if you have a high level of motivation towards losing weight,
getting fitter, improving your diet and improving sporting performance, but are a little lost and
confused on how to maximise your potential in these areas then a personal trainer may be
one of the best purchases you could ever make. I have made a list of five of the best
reasons why a personal trainer might be the best way forward in achieving your fitness
goals…..

  • Education; a personal trainer won’t necessarily aid your fitness journey just for the
time that you are working with them, a personal trainer can provide you with an
education on how to sustainably maintain a fitness regime in the future. From
teaching appropriate form to nutritional advice a PT can help with it all, and having a
more well rounded knowledge of this area is undoubtedly a major benefit in the
future. You may complete an 8 week course with a PT, but the education they can
provide during that time is never going to stop helping you, even years after you’ve
    completed working with one.
  • Personalisation; everyone is different. People have different abilities, physical
requirements and goals that will make their approach to fitness incredibly varied from
one case to the next. A personal trainer understands this, so if you are trying to
implement your own regime and are struggling with conflicting advice from other gym
goers, friends, the internet etc and this is impacting on the effectiveness of your
training, then a PT is a good way to go. They can personalise a regime that works for
you and your lifestyle to give the best results possible, cutting out the crap and
supporting you achieve your fitness goals.
  • Confidence; confidence is a very common barrier to a fitness regime and definitely
one of the biggest limiting factors that a person will have when it comes to not
achieving their goals. A personal trainer is trained to deal with this, and can give a
client the confidence required to take accountability for their fitness long after a plan
    may have been carried out.
  • Working Around Time Constraints; another one of the biggest barriers that a
person can have in taking part in a regular fitness regime is time constraints, people
who work and have families often struggle to find the time to maintain a level of
fitness that they’d desire. A personal trainer can work around this and tailor a plan to
suit your schedule, however demanding, and provide an education on how to carry
on maintaining their fitness long after the plan has finished.
  • Results; a personal trainer will have an extensive background in understanding how
to implement a plan that will ensure that the client meets their specific fitness goals, a
lot of this is done by getting the client to be more specific in what they want out the
service, and understanding that getting ‘a little bit fitter and a little bit lighter’ isn’t a
specific goal and can be an impediment to getting to where you want to be. By
ensuring the client is targeting a specific and more importantly, realistic target then it
becomes much simpler to design a regime that the client will see results from, rather
than just aimlessly exercising, giving the client the satisfaction and reward they are
    looking for.
